Today is Valentine’s Day and I’m thinking about that first kiss from a cute neighborhood boy. I’m also thinking about the painting that changed my approach to art, “Stolen Kiss”.
As a college student, my teachers encouraged us to explore and challenge ourselves, to strive toward creating a unique style of our own. This college piece was my stylistic starting point. Previously, my paintings were realistic-ish. But this piece changed everything. With this piece I found a style and favorite medium – gouache.
So many years later, this painting continues to affect my work. I reflect on the effort it took to create and strive to recapture that same sense of momentum and uniqueness in new work.
